Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 6. Broken Y. Point of curl between BE.

Reverse E. Stemless. Without the double fraction bar or dropped S of reverse M. Broken TS. Plain raised ridge between dentils and tops of AMER, overlapping the dentils above ER but farther from them above AM and left.

Die states: I. Reverse has at least five partly blurred sets of clash marks from dentils through bases of ERICA and right ribbon to top of first o. Newcomb 6-E.

II. Faint crack through base of 802 (later through 1802) to rim at the right. Faint reverse clash marks from dentils above STAT. Faint crack from base of fraction to U. Newcomb 6b-Eb.

III. Faint arc crack from rim through R, base of T, below Y, to rim opposite chin. Faint clash marks from dentils above ED STA. Newcomb 6c-Eb.

IV. The crack of state ill forks opposite the mouth with the new branch pointing down. Newcomb 6d-Eb.

V. Reverse repolished: clash marks from dentils and ridge above AMER are now barely visible.

VI. Reverse cracked from rim through E(O) to wreath, up through AT, and back to the rim. Very faint crack from the left side of c(E) to bow. Newcomb 6d-Ec.

VII. Reverse cracked from the rim through left serifs of E(S) to the wreath. The crack of state II now extends through the left top of u to the rim. Newcomb 6d-Ed.

VIII. The right obverse rim is beginning to crumble around the crack (poor centering may obscure this). Reverse crack joins tops of UNIT, reaching the rim above E at the same point as the crack described in state VI. Cracked from the rim above N to top of the adjacent I. Newcomb 6d-Ee.

IX. At least four sets of clash marks from leaves right of the brow. (Newcomb's footnote to 6d-Ee.)

Equivalents: Proskey 2. Doughty 165. McGirk 2A, 2B, 2B2, 2C. Ross 2-B. Newcomb 9. Sheldon 231. EAC 9.

Encyclopedia 1746.

Rarity 1.

Remarks: Obverse resembles that of number 16. This variety may have followed the latter. Sometimes found with a double profile. The pattern of cracks suggests that a later state may exist with rim break on UNIT. The box in ANS marked "Newcomb 6-E" (supposedly ex Hills 11/1923 and illustrated on Newcomb's plate) contains instead a state V coin.

The Jack H. Robinson collection coin (lot 503) has a plain mint clip affecting the bases of 80 and tops of ES.
