Remarks: First described by Edward Cogan on November 1, 1858. This coin went to Joseph J. Mickley.
Probably 7,000 to 7,200, perhaps more, were struck. Two are reported with plain edge. 1) R. D. Book, American Numismatic Society. 29 millimeters. 2) Reported by Dr. William H. Sheldon. John S. Ashby Jr. illustrated one with a straight clip (from end of the strip).' See "Oops!" chapter.
The fantastically sharp Eliasberg specimen may have been struck as a prooflike presentation specimen and is the only Mint State 1793 Liberty Cap cent known. In 1890, Peter Mougey traveled from Cincinnati to Philadelphia for the sole purpose of buying this coin at the Cleneay sale.
Darwin B. Palmer, Jr.'s poll of EAC members revealed that they rated this variety the most beautiful of all 1793 varieties.
