Obverse 11.
Reverse I.
Edge: ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR with two leaf clusters after DOLLAR. (illustrated at the Wreath cent introduction)
Die states: 1. As variety 16a.
II. Light clash marks, from the leaves, behind the curls and before the neck.
III. Additional clash marks at the neck, chin, and, from AMERICA, before the profile with final A at T(Y). Faint clash marks in the left wreath and through the numerator.
IV. The heavy clash marks have been polished off the obverse die. The centers are flat with weak rims. The profile is less well defined. The reverse crack described by Sheldon is a clash mark.
Equivalents: Crosby-Levick 9H. Crosby 11-J. McGirk 2K2. Sheldon 11b. EAC 16b. Encyclopedia 1645.
Rarity 4.
Remarks: Discovered by L. Bayard Smith, before 1869.
Rediscovered by W. W. Neil, March 1928. Evidently Neil had not read Crosby-Levick. (American Journal a/Numismatics, 1869.)
Possibly comprised 2,500 to 3,000 out of the 11,825 delivered July 6. The change to the Lettered Edge may distinguish the Watson & Greenleaf copper shipment from earlier sources. These are often found on defective planchets. The mixture of die states indicates that the three batches of blanks overlapped, many being loaded into the hopper with no attempt to keep them separate.
