Obverse 6.
Reverse G. Type of 1799. The fraction bar is long, heavy, high, and close to the numerator. A die scratch from the right end of the fraction bar extends through the right ribbon. Stem of the berry right of (ON)E is horizontal and extremely short. Berry stems below F and C(E) are vertical and the berry below E(O) is virtually stemless, its trace of a stem arising from the thick stem of an adjacent leaf. Berry left of C(E) is almost stemless, as are the paired berries nearest (N)T and ER. C(E), ES, and F are all normal. Weak at NT, adjacent leaves, and right bow.
Die states: I. Obverse has clash marks from the leaves near ribbon. Reverse has severe clash marks from the drapery and 1801 at TES OF, forming a "retained cud" rim break. On the earliest strikings, the break does not reach the base of (E)S. Outline of the lowest curl is on T, not A(T), and 8 is above s. Newcomb5-Ib (supplement, 1931).
II. Second and heavier set of clash marks from the drapery and 1801 at ATES OF. Outline of the lowest curl is on A(T) and 8 is between tops of ES,
Equivalents: Newcomb 13. Sheldon NC-2. EAC 10.
Encyclopedia 1738.
Rarity 7. Seven are known.
Remarks: George H. Clapp bought the discovery coin from Paul M. Lange. This is included in Newcomb's printed supplement, issued in 1931.
The break mostly coincides with a severe clash mark from the lower line of the drapery. The clashing accident doubtless explains the break. What were earlier called cracks at TE(S) and OF are clash marks.
Reverse was axially misaligned: the weakest areas are at the top obverse and bottom reverse.
