Walter Breen

Obverse 2. The date is spaced with 18 and 01 farther apart than 80. The first 1 is pointed. Point of the curl is between curves of B. Top of y is high with the left foot broken away.
Reverse A.
Die states: 1. Minute traces of clash marks from leaves above the hair ribbon. RTY are normal. Reverse as number I, state VIII.
II. Die failure weakens RTY, beginning at the tops of these letters. Rust develops at LIB, behind the ribbon, and between the rim and lowest curl. At least six sets of faint clash marks from the leaves are above and below the ribbon. The reverse clash marks of number I, state VI have been polished off the die, but at least six new fainter sets have taken their place at parts of the wreath. The rim break is slightly larger. Newcomb 2-Ad.
III. Rim broken above RTY. Most of the clash marks have worn off or been polished off. Reverse dentils are weaker. Axial misalignment: weakest at end of the drapery and at OF. Apparently Newcomb had not seen this coin when he wrote his book, as he did not list this die state. Clapp called it "2b-Ad."
Equivalents: McGirk 3C2. Newcomb 2. Sheldon 214. EAC 2. Encyclopedia 1738.
High Rarity 3.
Remarks: Apparently discovered by Dr. Charles E. McGirk.
Often weak on the profile and end of drapery, lower right obverse dentils, some leaves on the right branch, s OF, and upper right border, reflecting axial misalignment of state III.
