Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 5.

Reverse E. Three Errors: the denominator reads 000, U was first punched inverted (rotated 180°) then corrected, and the left stem end is missing. M is obviously repunched.

Die states: 1. Severe clash marks from the dentils through BERTY and right. Clash marks from 100 show near BER, and from CA at the brow. Reverse perfect. Newcomb 4b-B.

II. Bulge at ERTY with faint traces of a second bulge left of the lowest curl. Extremely rare.

Equivalents: Newcomb 4. Sheldon 218. EAC 8. Encyclopedia 1742.

High Rarity 5.

Remarks: May exist in an early state without obverse clash marks from the dentils.

Discovered by Howard R. Newcomb.

Struck between states I and II of number 7. Apparently Scot withdrew the reverse to polish off clash marks, leaving the obverse in the press to perish: triage. Possibly he did not expect the obverse to last long enough that removal of clash marks would make a difference.
