Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 6. Reground to remove clash marks. Numerals of the date are slightly thinner, apparently minutely farther from one another and from the curl and drapery. The shoulder loop is weak and incomplete.

Reverse H. Fraction 1/000 with shortest bar. Differs from the other single error 1/000 reverses: berry opposite the top of (N)E, unlike reverse K. The left stem is normal, without the elongated point of reverse L. ST are low.

Die states: I. Rim crumbling right of Y. Newcomb 6b-D.

II. At least four sets of clash marks below the chin, near the hair ribbons, and from TES near the date. A bulge begins at the rim below 18, at first faint. Reverse cracked from the rim above A(T), almost touching A, through base of T(ES), and to the top right double leaf, then midway between F A to the rim.

III. Arc crack from rim at 8:00 through the curls, shoulder, and final 1 to the rim.

IV. Reverse cracked from the rim through (s)T, outer leaf below AT, and to the crack of state II.

V. Rim break below 18. Clash marks from dentils right of the date to end of the drapery. Reverse rim break at AM. Cracked from the rim midway between AM to the crack of state II about midway between F A. Another crack joins the bases of AM.

VI. Rim break below the entire date touches the final 1 and extends beyond both 1s. Additional clash marks through the date, below the chin, and near the ribbons. Reverse crack from the right foot of A(T) joins the earlier crack just below T(ES). Cracked from the rim to O(F) and to the crack of state II at the outer leaf of a triplet. Two more cracks from the rim to AT. Newcomb 6d-Dc. McGirk 1D2.

VII. Rim break below the date now touches O. Reverse rim break on AM. Crumbling on the upper left curve of O(F). Newcomb 6e-Dd. McGirk 1D3.

VIII. Small rim break above A(T). Two more cracks from bases of ST to the nearest leaf. Newcomb 6e-De.

Equivalents: Proskey 2. Doughty 157. McGirk 1C, 1D, 1D2, 1D3. Newcomb 7. Sheldon 220. EAC 11. Encyclopedia 1740.

Low Rarity 3.

Remarks: Both Newcomb and Sheldon renumbered the obverse. As there is no evidence of deliberate alteration, there is no need to follow their lead.

McGirk 1D2 is our state VI, 1D3 our state VII, described from a coin in the Dr. S. T. Millard collection. The former calls for a "triangular piece broken out of die at bust": this was apparently described from the coin which later appeared as lot 324 in the 1986 sale of the Robinson S. Brown, Jr. collection and which is actually state IV. The "triangular piece" is a planchet defect.
