CoinFacts Narrative Update
The 1848 "CAL" Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is one of the most historically significant coins in American numismatics. Intimately tied to the California Gold Rush, its status as the first coin struck from California gold is highly doubtful. PCGS Set Registry Update
Bulgaria is located in Eastern Europe and borders the Black Sea. Beach resorts populate the nation's beautiful shores and can be enjoyed by anyone. At one time, The Ottoman Empire had control of Bulgaria for almost five centuries, and eventually Bulgaria became an independent nation in 1908. The first gold coin struck by the Bulgarian Mint in Sophia after independence was the 1912 100 Leva. This coin was struck again as a "restrike" between 1967 and 1968 as a proof issue and remains popular among collectors. Another gold coin was not struck until 1963, when the 10 and 20 leva coins were minted to celebrate the Slavic alphabet. High-graded PCGS examples of these modern issues will be difficult to find at prices near the melt value of gold. A few more gold coins were issued over the years as well, like the 1981 1,000 Leva coin shown above depicting a mother and child. Graded PCGS PR70DCAM, the coin celebrates the 1,300th anniversary of Bulgaria. This coin is part of the 1963-1984 Bulgarian Commemorative Gold Proof Set for collectors to consider building.
