CoinFacts Narrative Update

In the early 1980s world mints had been taking advantage of selling silver bullion-related coins to meet public demand. PCGS Set Registry Update

When the silver Mexican Onza Libertad (one ounce) series was released in 1982, the price of silver had averaged about $9 for the year. Silver prices dashed past the $90-per-ounce mark about in recent days, setting a new record. The Mexican Onza Libertad series continues to grow with collectors worldwide, and in 1996 there was a second design change within the series. The coin became wider in diameter and the Angel of Independence was displayed on a column. In 1998, the mintage for the one ounce Libertad coin was only 67,000, which was the second-lowest mintage of the series. A five-coin set of the 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and Onza Libertad all boast low mintages, which collectors have duly noticed. An Onza Libertad in a PCGS MS69 grade would cost a collector about $3,000 in the marketplace today. Shown above is the 1998 Onza Libertad that has immaculate toning which is part of the 1998 Mexican Onza Libertad Year Set Circulation Strikes that PCGS has recently listed.
