CoinFacts Narrative Update

The 2016-W Gold Mercury Dime went on sale April 21, 2016, at a price of $205. Within 45 minutes of the coin's release, the U.S. Mint notified customers that the faithful 24-karat reproduction of the Mercury Dime had become unavailable. However, following order cancellations and returns, a small inventory of 8,889 pieces remained by mid-year. After months of collector anticipation and anxiety regarding price hikes, the Mint re-opened sales on December 15, 2016, with a strict limit of one coin per household to prevent hoarding.   Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

The Spanish Empire was vast, with many countries becoming part of its growing portfolio from the beginning of the 16th century. During the start of the 19th century, nations under Spanish rule sought to gain their freedom, which weakened the empire and caused it to deplete its treasuries as Spain fought wars all over the world. Guatemala gained its independence on September 21, 1821, but the first peso denomination for Guatemala was not minted until 1859. The coin was designed by Johann-Baptist Frener, with the obverse featuring the effigy of Rafael Carrera and the reverse displaying the nation's coat of arms. The 1871 Peso shown above is part of the Guatemala Silver Peso Carrera Head Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1859-1871) that PCGS has recently listed. Completing this set in uncirculated grades will be extremely challenging for our members.

Additional sets from various countries have been added, so please feel free to browse the PCGS Set Registry when you have a chance and you may find there is a set for almost anyone to build. The PCGS Set Registry offers many different sets from all over the world and specialty sets for advanced collectors. We appreciate your continued patronage!
