PCGS Set Registry Update
On August 9, 1902, Edward VII was crowned king of the United Kingdom and its colonies. Coinage that was struck during his reign from 1902 through 1910 carried his portrait in a low-relief manner. The obverse with Edward VII's effigy is prone to nicks as is the reverse, featuring St. George slaying a dragon, which is also prone to unwelcome wear due to multiple highpoints. Collectors face many challenges acquiring pristine-looking coins from Edward VII's rule because of condition sensitivity issues, which are especially prevalent with coins that were struck from gold -- a relatively soft metal. Sovereigns and half sovereigns are two popular coins that were minted in gold for some of Great Britain's colonies. The designs for colonial gold were identical to those struck for use in Great Britain, with the exception of a differing mintmark on the reverse. For example, Australia employed three different mints: those in Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne. The coin shown above is part of the 1902 Australian Gold Year Set that PCGS recently listed. Collectors may find this set to be short but difficult to complete in MS64 grades and above.
