PCGS Set Registry Update
Born in France on September 6, 1757, was a boy named Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert Motier, The Marquis de LaFayette or -- as he came to be known in the United States -- LaFayette. He was born into an aristocratic family at the Château de Chavaniac and became an officer at the age of 13 in France. LaFayette was so enamoured by the American Revolution that he left France and joined the Continental Army at the age of 19. Within a few years, he became a senior officer in the Continental Army and was later a major general. He was close friends with Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington to name a few. LaFayette fought alongside some of the men noted previously, discussed strategy with all of them, and he played an integral role in the United States gaining its freedom from Great Britain. Marquis de LaFayette was honored by the United States in the form of a commemorative silver dollar in a jugate portrait alongside George Washington. The coin was approved by Congress on March 3, 1899, designed by Charles E. Barber, and released in 1900. Several documented varieties exist, which are noted by numismatist Frank Duvall. Shown above is a splendid 1900 Lafayette Dollar DuVall-C2 that is part of the Lafayette Dollars DuVall Varieties Set, Circulation Strikes (1900) that PCGS has recently listed.
