PCGS Set Registry Update
The silver rush in the United States began in 1859 with the discovery of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, Nevada. This story begins with two brothers named Hosea and Ethan Grosh, who discovered a large vein of silver. Unfortunately the brothers died from disease and Henry Tompkins Comstock, who was a friend, laid claim to the silver deposit with his friends. Roughly a 2-1/2 mile deposit within this discovery produced over $500,000,000 in gold and silver ore. The Carson City Mint is one of the most famous in the United States and was located in Carson City, Nevada. Established in 1870, the Mint was set up primarily to coin silver during the rich silver discoveries primarily from the Comstock Lode. The first "CC"-minted Liberty Seated Dollar coin was minted on February 11, 1870, at the Carson City Mint and gold coins were produced there as well, which are highly sought-after by collectors. One of the most famous coins produced at Carson City beginning in 1878 was the Morgan Dollar. The last coin minted there rolled off the presses in 1893. The coin shown above is a Morgan Dollar dated 1883, which was also minted at Carson City and is part of the PCGS Set Registry listing titled 1883 Mint Set no Gold.
