One of the most important advances in technology was the development of the steam engine. In 1712, a man by the name of Thomas Newcomen developed the first commercially successful steam engine that could transmit power to a machine. Newcomen's invention was known as the atmospheric engine. It was originally used for pumping water, and this advancement led to the development of a powerful steam engine. It was inventor Richard Trevithick who is credited with inventing the high-pressure steam engine and first functioning railway steam locomotive. Travel by rail became extremely popular all over the world by the beginning of the 20th century. In 1891, The Trans-Siberian Railway was being built by Russia and it was completed in 1916, spanning over 9,000 kilometers! In 1954, the first route from Moscow, Russia, to Beijing, China, was established. The 500 tugrik coin shown above was issued by Mongolia to highlight three countries that are in this vast network of trains.
