Doubled dies are among the most popular of all coin varieties, perhaps because they can appear so bizarre and are often worth a lot of money. The really valuable doubled dies are those that exhibit doubling strong enough to be seen by the unaided eye.

Minor doubled dies – the kind that may cause one’s eyes to strain when the doubling is apparent only under 5X or 10X magnification – typically don’t muster strong prices. However, that’s not the case with the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse Washington Quarter, FS-801. Cataloged by PCGS with a spec number of 146004, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse Washington Quarter showcases obvious doubling in the inscriptions that populate the periphery of the coin.

Doubling can be seen in the inscriptions “STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.” Doubling is also perceptible in the lower regions of the wreath under the heraldic eagle. The coin was made popular in part by way of its inclusion in the seminal Cherrypickers’ Guide by Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton and is recognized by PCGS.

The coin is a significant doubled die, and one of several that are widely collected among the 90% silver run (struck from 1932 through 1964) of the Washington Quarter series. Though not necessary to complete a basic date-and-mintmark set of Washington Quarters, the 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse Washington Quarter is a favorite variety among many diehard Washington Quarter series enthusiasts. This doubled die is therefore included in many assemblages representing the series. Several PCGS Registry Sets accommodate the inclusion of a 1964-D Doubled Die Reverse Quarter, a coin that could easily set the collector back by $150 in a grade of MS63.
