Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 5. Small close date with blunt 1 and small 7.

Similar to obverse 4, but L, E, and y are low with bases of LIB very close and BER farther apart. R is much nearer the hair. Right base of Y is short.

Reverse C.

Die states: I. No obverse crumbling at the dentils and no bulges. Faint clash marks from leaves before the throat. Reverse has double clash marks with one set rotated about 30°, from drapery below ATE to s, and below 50 to F. Clash marks also from hair in the left wreath and from profile in the right wreath.

II. Rim beginning to crumble above IBE and space between RT. No obverse bulge is visible. Later, crumbling advances, eventually covering most dentils above LIBERT. Centering may not permit these to show and the dentils are often weak.

III. Bulge develops left of the lowest curl. Top obverse border becomes increasingly weak.

IV. The bulge is larger. Reverse has additional rotated clash marks at UN and TA.

V. Plain narrow rim breaks above LIBE. Equivalents: Proskey 5. Doughty 207. McGirk 5D through 7B. Clapp 6. Sheldon 276. EAC 6. Encyclopedia 1772.

Rarity 1.

Remarks: Arguably commonest of all Draped Bust cents. The reverse is found rotated to various positions in all die states. (For further information on die states and die rotation, see: Fred Iskra, "5-276 Die States and Rotations," Penny-Wise, no. 150, 5/15/1992, pp. 149- 158.)
