Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 3. Large 7 over 6. Large close date with perfect 1, 80 more closely spaced than other figures, and large 7 heavily repunched over 6. Closer date than the regular 1806 obverse.

Reverse A.

Die states: I. Perfect obverse.

II. Oash marks from leaves near ribbon and throat. Cluster of tiny narrow flaws or die file marks between Y and the brow. Reverse has parallel flaws pointing down through IC to the nearest leaf. Later these fade. The most prominent of these is often described as a crack.

III. Bulges behind the lowest curl and between D S.

IV. Faint horizontal crack from the obverse rim about 7:00. Bulges are heavier. Reverse rim breaks develop above STA and left. These are rarely clear as poor centering may conceal them.

Equivalents: Proskey 1. Doughty 203. McGirk 1A, 1B.

Clapp 3. Sheldon 273. EAC 3. Encyclopedia 1768.

Rarity 1.

Remarks: This obverse die was probably made in 1805 minus the final digit; planned 1806 use became impossible when the cent press broke down.
