Walter Breen

Obverse 2. Small 7 over 6. Small wide date with blunt 1 almost touching hair and curl, small 7 punched over a larger and apparently pointed 6, and both tops of 7 touching drapery.
Reverse A.
Die states: I. Perfect obverse
II. Clash marks from leaves below the ribbon. Reverse clash marks within the wreath.
III. Heavy crack from rim through R to brow just above the eye. Die failure right of the crack obliterates much of TY. Extremely rare. Discovered by Kenneth Fuller on November 7, 1952.
Equivalents: McGirk 1C. Clapp 2. Sheldon 272. EAC 2. Encyclopedia 1769.
Low Rarity 5.
Remarks: Discovered by Dr. C. E. McGirk. Usually in low grades and often porous.
Obverse was probably made in 1803 minus the final digiti planned 1806 use became impossible when the cent press broke down.
Both this and obverse 3 have the 7 positioned precisely to obliterate the pointed or knobbed top of 6 if any (evidently intentionally). What remains of the digit 6 on both obverse dies differs enough from the knobbed 6 of 1806 to suggest that the 7 is over a pointed 6.
