CoinFacts Narrative Update
The 1839-C Liberty Gold Half Eagle is a one-year type. Christian Gobrecht’s design features a Liberty head with the mintmark placed on the obverse. In 1840, the treatment of the head was changed substantially. The Head of 1839 shows the back of the hair bun farther from the 10th star and the neck more curved than on the Head of 1840. The Head of 1839 also shows the right end of the neck farther from the final star than on the Head of 1840. Finally, on the Head of 1839, the series of curls at the rear of Liberty’s neck shows an entirely different shape and composition than those seen on the Head of 1840. Read more.
PCGS Set Registry Update
King George V was officially crowned on June 22, 1911. Coinage throughout the British Empire could now bear the effigy of the new king. Gold coinage was highly sought throughout the world, and Great Britain was one of main purveyors of standardized gold. Australia issued the 1/2 sovereign (3.99 grams) and sovereign (7.98 grams) denominations that were struck in .917 fineness. The Perth Mint and the Sydney Mint both struck the 1/2 sovereign and the sovereign with an effigy of George V. The Melbourne Mint struck only the sovereign denomination. These coins today are pursued by collectors all over the globe. Recently, PCGS listed the 1911 Australian Gold Year Set for collectors to consider building, which will challenge collectors. This set has all the 1/2 sovereign and sovereign denominations from each mint.
Additional sets from various countries have been added, so please feel free to browse the PCGS Set Registry when you have a chance and you may find there is a set for almost anyone to build. The PCGS Set Registry offers many different sets from all over the world and specialty sets for advanced collectors. We appreciate your continued patronage!
