PCGS Set Registry Update
In 1681, the region of Saxe-Meiningen was established after Duke Ernest the Pious died. Ernestine Duchy of Saxe-Gotha had partitioned lands among Pious's seven sons. The eldest son, Bernhardt, had been given the town of Meiningen with other lands as well, and he became the first duke of this region. This region, known as the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, continued to be ruled up until 1918, when Bernhardt II had to relinquish control of the region. On May 1, 1920, the state was merged into the region of Thuringia which is one of Germany's sixteen federal states that exists today. The 1908 5 Mark depicted above is part of the Saxe-Meiningen 2, 3, 5 Mark Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1901-1908) that has recently been listed for collectors to consider building.
