PCGS Set Registry Update

The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, was established in 1688 as a private institution. When Charles VI had passed away in 1740, the academy saw a downturn that was reversed by his daughter Maria Theresa, who became the empress. Throughout the years, many artists produced works for the country of Austria that included sculpture, architecture, paintings, and engravings. One of these native sons who attended the Fine Arts Academy was Ferdiand Welz, who studied sculpture from 1933 to 1938. In 1940, he was appointed the head engraver of the Austrian Mint, and he produced many designs that were for coinage. One reverse design that Welz produced was for the 10 schilling denomination. This design stood the test of time and was coined up until the year 2000. Welz's last design for a coin was a lifelike portrait of Pope John Paul II on a 1988 500 schilling coin, which commemorated his visit to Austria from June 23-27 of that year. The coin shown above displays Ferdinand Welz's timeless design, which is from the 1965 Austrian Proof Set that PCGS has recently listed for collectors to consider building.

Additional sets from various countries have been added, so please feel free to browse the PCGS Set Registry when you have a chance and you may find there is a set for almost anyone to build.
