The 2009-P
While a mintage of 39,840,000 might not seem low, it is low once compared to other modern Jefferson nickels. For instance, the 2000-D nickel had a mintage of over 1.5 billion.
In April of 2009, the Mint discontinued producing nickels and dimes for circulation. It also decreased production of other circulating coins due to the decreased demand for circulating coins.
After the coins were released, raw Uncirculated 2009-P Jefferson Nickels were selling for over $5 each and rolls were selling for over $100 each in the aftermarket.
