Proofs are very rare but, along with the proofs of 1862 and 1863, are more often available than any other proofs prior to 1881. In my opinion, it is quite likely that a substantial number of the original proof mintage were never sold and were subsequently melted. I would estimate that perhaps a dozen proofs still exist of the 50 originally struck.
