Proof 1841 Silver Dollars are extremely rare. Approximately five examples are known, but one is in the Smithsonian Institution, while the others seem to have found good homes. The Pittman example, perhaps the finest known, bounced around for a few years and last sold in 2013.
In 1841, the Mint did not have a regulated program for the production and sale of Proof coins. Rather, collectors who had a special relationship with the Mint could visit the facility and select their own coins. Mintages were not recorded, so researchers must rely on carefully compiled lists to guess how many of each denomination have survived. The number of surviving Silver Dollars is much smaller than the number of 1841 Quarter Eagles, for example, but seems to be in line with the other denominations from this year.
