David Akers (1975/88):
The relative rarity of the two varieties of the 1831 is exactly reversed from the 1830. With the 1831, the Small 5D is much more rare than the Large 5D. Almost all 1831 Half Eagles I have seen were the Large 5D variety and I would say that the Small 5D variety is 3-4 times as rare as the Large 5D variety and also more rare than the 1830 Large 5D, the 1834 Crosslet 4, or even the 1832 Square Base 2, 13 Stars.
