David Akers (1975/88):
The 1821 is one of the many rarities of this type. The number of auction appearances would seem to indicate that this date is just as rare as the more highly regarded 1824 and more rare than the 1826. In my opinion, however, the 1821 is not quite as rare as the 1824 although there are fewer 1821 Half Eagles known in choice uncirculated condition than there are 1824's. The 1821 is definitely more difficult to obtain , especially in Unc., than the 1826. Most known 1821's are fairly high grade. EF or AU being the typical grade, but true uncs are seldom seen. The number of 1821 Half Eagles in existence is probably on the order of 25-30 including two or three known proofs.
