2006-W $1 Burnished Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary (Special Strike)

Jaime Hernandez: This is the first time that an uncirculated Silver eagle has displayed a “W” mint mark. It was also produced on specially prepared planchets, also known as burnished planchets. Furthermore, this is the first time since 1986 that the Mint has ever offered two different types of uncirculated Silver eagles within the same year.

The 2006-W Burnished Uncirculated eagle was produced as a second version of the uncirculated Silver eagle. This year, the Mint produced the regular 2006 silver eagle, without displaying the “W” mint mark, which is only sold to a few select Mint authorized dealers. These authorized dealers then re-sell the coins to the public.

However, when it came to the 2006-W Burnished Uncirculated Silver eagles, the Mint decided to offer them directly to the public, rather than going through their select authorized dealers. The coins were priced at $19.95 each directly from the U.S. Mint. Or they could have also been purchased as a three piece 20th Anniversary Set which had a price of $100 each.
