David Akers (1975/88):
The 1881-S is a scarce and underrated date, slightly more rare than the 1880-S but not quite as difficult to obtain in Unc. Uncs are known but only a very few of them could reasonably be called choice or gem.
Ron Guth:
The Saddle Ridge Hoard of gold coins, discovered in northern California in 2013, contained thirty-eight 1881-S $20s, all of which were considered gradeable. This group included nine Mint State examples, the best of which was a PCGS MS64 that tied previously existing examples for "Second Finest Known" honors.
