David Akers (1975/88):
Most known specimens of the 1872-S are low grade, i.e. VF or less. In full EF the date is very rare and I have seen just a few at that level and two or three in AU. I known of one strictly uncirculated piece in a private west coast collection and the auction records indicate that there may be one or two others. As a date, the 1872-S is as rare as the 1868-S, 1869-S and 1871-S and only a little less rare than the 1866-S Motto, 1867-S, 1870-S, and 1873-S. The mintmark is very small but is generally sharper than on the other S Mint Half Eagles of this period.
