There are only two known of this rarity.

P. Scott Rubin: The Continental Currency or Dollar of 1776 struck in silver with EG FECIT within the circle that also contains the word FUGIO, is represented by only two specimens. The finer of the two is graded MS-63 by NGC. This coin now resides in the Eric P. Newman Collection and should be considered one of the most valuable of all U.S. coinage.

This coin is the finest of only four Continental Currency coins struck in silver, making it the finest of the first Silver Dollars struck by the American Congress as our government was called on the coins themselves.

This pre-dates the Nova Constellation Mark (or 1000) by six years and the 1794 Silver Dollars by eighteen years.

The Newman coin is said to have first appeared in a British Sale in 1886, this is stated in the Chapman's 5/1887 Sale of the Mc Coye Collection it was lot 238 but the coin was withdrawn, in Henry Chapman’s 1912 Earle Sale this coin was lot number 2132 and it realized $2,200.00 quite a sum for the time period. The coin next was in the collection of Waldo Newcomer who loaned this coin to the ANS’s 1914 Exhibition where it was joined on display by H.O. Granberg’s specimen which is the only other known coin struck in silver from these dies. The 1914 Exhibition book however only plates the Newcomer coin since it is the finer of the two known.

The Granberg coin latter appeared in Stack’s 12/11/1947 Sale as lot 10 and most recently in Stack’s October, 2003 John J. Ford, Jr. Sale Part 1 as lot 7 where the coin was graded Extremely Fine and brought $425,500.

The Newman coin is slated to be sold in the May, 2014 auction of his collection where Heritage will off a major portion of Newman's Colonial collection.
