David Akers (1975/88): Relatively common in all grades including gem Unc. In fact, this is one of the five most common Type III gold dollars. The 3 in the date is "open" only when compared to the 3 on the Closed 3 variety, and actually the upper loop and bottom loop are very close together. As a result, some examples of this variety have been offered in recent years as the far more rare 1873 Closed 3. (Remember, the 3 on the Closed 3 variety is so closed that it looks almost like an 8.) There are a number of varieties of the 1873 gold dollar, and specimens exist with a full LIBERTY on the headband while others have only a partial LIBERTY or no LIBERTY at all.
