Ron Guth:

Judd 1538 is a Half Dollar pattern from 1877. William Barber created the designs for both sides. The obverse shows a head of Liberty wearing a wreath and a cap with LIBERTY on a ribbon around the cap. The reverse shows an eagle with its wings outspread standing on a tablet with the words E PLURIBUS UNUM. Neither side was adopted for use on coins made for circulation.

Judd 1538 is very rare, with only three to four examples known.
