David Akers (1975/88):
Description: Obverse. Identical to J-349. Reverse. Identical to J-286.
Comments: This pattern appeared in the same three auctions as the preceding pattern, J-349, and has not been offered for sale since 1884. All three offerings were of exactly the same coin and there has never been a hint of a second specimen.
Although the first of the three sales was in 1875, ten years prior to his first listing of patterns in The Coin Collector's Journal, Davis failed to mention the existence of this pattern in gold He did however note that there were copper and bronzed copper trial pieces.
The only known specimen is in the Johns Hopkins University collection and was purchased at the Woodward Sale by T. H. Garrett.
