Ron Guth:

This coin is a remarkably well-made copy of a 1652 Pine Tree Threepence, but in copper, rather than the intended silver. This and other early U.S. Colonial coins were copied by Thomas Wyatt, and his concoctions are eagerly collected today. The attribution numbers for this particular variety are Noe Fabrication M, Kenney 5, and Whitman 14070. The exact same dies were also used to strike silver versions. Supposedly, the copper version from these dies were made by Edwin Bishop, who acquired the dies from Wyatt.

Today, this variety is quite rare. According to Q. David Bowers, the mintage is a "...Small unknown quantity..." Auction appearances are few and any opportunity to purchase an example should be embraced.
