Ron Guth:

The 1942-P Type 2 Nickel in Proof was a late entry to the coin market. It was struck after the Mint had shifted to production of the silver war-time alloy and after all the Proof sets had been struck and sold to collectors. Thus, the 1942-P Type 2 Nickel was only available for purchase as a single coin. The total mintage of the Proof Type 2 Nickel was 27,600 pieces, compared to 29,600 of the Proof Type 1 Nickels.

As of July 2011, PCGS had certified over 4,500 Proof Type 2 Nickels, virtually all of which were Brilliant (non-Cameo) Proofs. The finest example certified by PCGS is a single PR-69.
