In 2008 the U.S. Mint offered a third option for American Gold Eagle Collectors. It offered the regular Uncirculated and Proof Gold Eagles as in previous years. But this year, it also offered a third version which was an Uncirculated Burnished example containing a W mint mark.
Sales were low for this particular issue and after the sales figures were reported, this issue had one of the lowest mintages for the Uncirculated Gold Eagle series.
