Jaime Hernandez:
The 2008-W Proof Silver Eagles went on sale on January 03, 2008. The coins were offered directly by the U.S. Mint at $31.95 each.
There were no ordering limits or maximum production quantities imposed, since the coins were being produced to meet collectors demand. However, in the middle of August of 2008, the U.S. Mint seized offering this coin to all collectors. Mainly because of the lack of required silver blank planchets which were needed to produce the 2008 Bullion Uncirculated Silver Eagles.
Once the production of the 2008-W Proof Silver Eagles was halted, the coins began realizing significant premiums in the after market and the coins were selling just over $50 raw. The demand for these coins unquestionably exceeded the availability. In essence, it also drove prices higher for several other coins in the Proof Silver Eagle series.
