The 2008-W Silver eagles were struck in special burnished planchets. This was the third year in which the Mint produced a special W mint state Silver eagle besides producing the regular 2008 non W mint state and proof silver eagles. On March 17, 2008 the U.S. Mint began offering the 2008-W Mint State Silver eagles to the public. Each coin was being sold at $25.95 each.
The coins could have also been purchased through a 2008 Annual Uncirculated Coin Set. This set consisted of all four uncirculated 2008 Presidential dollar coins, a 2008 uncirculated Sacagawea Dollar and finally, the 2008-W Uncirculated Silver eagle. The price of this special six coin set was $37.95 each. The sales figures for the $1 2008-W Silver eagle ended up at about 520,000 coins sold.
