In 2006 the U.S. Mint introduced the first W mint mark Uncirculated coins in the Platinum Eagle series. The same year the Mint also offered the regular Uncirculated and Proof Platinum Eagles at a time when the price of platinum was very volatile. After the coin mintages were reported, the 2006-W $50 Uncirculated Platinum Eagles turned out to have one of the lowest mintages for the series. Only the 2008-W $50 and the $25 Uncirculated Platinum Eagles have a lower mintage.
