In 2006 the U.S. Mint itroduced a Special Uncirculated version of Platinum eagles containing W mint marks for the first time. Besides being a new issue, the 2006-W Mint State Platinum Eagle had a very small mintage compared to most other issues in the Platinum Eagle series. Its' final mintage was reported to be at 3,544 coins struck, making it a key date coin in the Platinum Eagle series.
