1824 Large Cents come in two major varieites: Normal Date and an 1824/1 overdate. This narrative covers the Normal Date.
Overall, the 1824 Large Cent is not a particularly rare date, but because it was never found in hoard quantities, it is decidedly more difficult to locate a Mint State 1824 Large Cent than an 1817, 1818, 1820, and even an 1816. Those 1824 Large Cents that have survived in Mint State tend to be middle-of-the-road (MS62 to MS64) and very few Gems are available to satisfy collector demand. We know of only a small handful that qualify as MS65 or better. Red-Brown examples are extremely scarce, but they tend to be nicer than the Brown examples. We are unaware of any 1824 Large Cents that would qualify as full Red.
