Fewer than a dozen J-85s are known to exist. They were all restruck as rarities to sell to collectors at a premium. Their closeness to J-84 indicates that they were created sometime after 1859 (based on the existence of a single J-84 that is known to have been struck over an 1859 Silver Dollar). The proper term for this variety is Name Removed, as Gobrecht’s name originally appeared on the base on the master hub, but was effaced before production of the working die (this interesting fact was discovered by our own John Dannreuther). Traces of the Gobrecht's name can still be seen on high-grade J-85s.
