The United States Marine Corps celebrates its 250th birthday on November 10, 2025, one day before Veterans Day. The U.S. Mint is marking the occasion with the release of a new, commemorative American Eagle silver proof coin on the anniversary of the Marine Corps’ inception at Philadelphia’s historic Tun Tavern.
The coin features the famous Adolph A. Weinman Walking Liberty design on the obverse, along with a special U.S. Marine Corps privy mark recognizing the military branch’s 250th anniversary. This coin is the latest in the popular American Silver Eagle series, which was introduced in 1986 when the United States Mint launched its internationally embraced American Eagle bullion coin program.
The new coin, which contains .999 troy ounce of fine silver, will be available to order through the U.S. Mint’s website, with an initial list price of $105. Fittingly, the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and have the “P” mintmark on the reverse.
The obverse of these limited-edition coins also features Weinman’s traditional artist mark under the inscription, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse shows a landing eagle clutching an oak branch, along with the inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “UNITED STATES,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
The American Eagle proof coin is the latest commemorative item produced this year in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Marines. The United States Mint has also recently released the U.S. Marines Proof Silver Dollar featuring the famous flag planting at Iwo Jima and the eagle, globe and anchor logo of the Marine Corps; a proof clad half dollar engraved with a modern Marine and a Continental Marine side by side; and a 250th anniversary uncirculated silver dollar with the Iwo Jima flag scene and the Marine logo.
The Mint also released commemorative gold proof coins for the Marines’ anniversary.
The Marine Corps was founded in 1775 by Capt. Samuel Nicholas, who recruited from Tun Tavern, a Philadelphia ale house frequented by Continental soldiers and members of the Continental Congress. The Marines were originally intended to conduct amphibious landings along with the new U.S. Navy – which also can trace its roots to Tun Tavern.
The U.S. Mint began producing coins and medals to commemorate relevant anniversaries and to honor American people, places, and important events more than a century ago. Many cite the 1848 CAL Quarter Eagle as the first commemorative, given that it recognizes the discovery of gold in California; the first official United States commemorative coins were struck in 1892.
The American Eagle series has become one of the most popular and sought-after items for collectors. Its graceful design gives a unique nod to American history, especially as a feature of coins that honor vital and historic organizations like the U.S. Marines.
This new coin will enhance any American Silver Eagle set on the PCGS Set Registry once it’s been submitted for grading with PCGS.
