Obverse 1. LE. VE. UH. VR. Crosslet 4, as in the half dollars and half eagles. Wide date. I is heavily repunched and RTY are repunched but less obviously. Die file marks through BERTY into hair. Double curl behind the eye. Ninth and 10th stars are closer together than others.

Reverse A. NR. PR. SPC. PC. N is above I which is above T, bases of STA are below TES, tops of TE(S) are very close, RI nearly touch, and I is slightly higher. Broad coarse dentils, unlike previous dies.

Die states: I. "Perfect dies." Reverse raised ridge beginning within the border. Light flowlines.

II. Clash marks at the throat and right of (N)E and (N)T.

Raised ridge at dentil tips above TES OF A. Smith (1985).

Rarity 1. Less common than number 2. Forms about 48% of 1814s auctioned. (United States Turban Cents, P: 158.)

Remarks: Occasionally found with a double profile. McGirk (Supplement, IB) described A. C. Gies's specimen with triple profile on nose and chin.

Condition Census:

At least a half dozen coins qualify at the MS-61 to MS-64 grade range, but nothing better has been seen. In total, probably around 25 examples exist in full Mint State. Some of the better examples are:
