Obverse 4. LH. LH. B. B. Large wide date with thick center stroke to 8, 81 farther apart than on obverse 3, and 2 high. L is low, BE lean left, and RT are repunched. Rust pit above earlobe. Stars 2-3 are closer together than others. Broad coarse dentils.
Reverse D. R. PR. SPC. NC. High leaf about midway between s and o. ST are slightly low.
Die states: I. Entire date is repunched: above the right foot of first 1, at the bases of 81, and at the upper left curve of 2. Reverse has double clash marks. Raised ridge develops at dentil tips, at first above TES OF AM, later extending around the entire periphery. Extremely rare. Discovered by Pete Smith at the 1987 EAC Convention
II. Repunching at the date fades out. A slight bulge develops right of the seventh star. Flow lines develop on both sides. Reverse has at least seven sets of clash marks through O(N) and c(E), others right of (N)E and (N)T.

III. Heavy obverse flow lines with the date and right stars pulled out to the rim. Defect in curl before ear. Reverse clash marks are worn off. Heavy flow lines through UNITED.
IV. New heavier double clash marks, from the chin above C(E), from the ribbon end right of (N)E, and from the fillet and parts of IT between NT.

Remarks: Plentiful in all grades, even AU. There was apparently a tiny hoard On weaker strikings, the leaf below c(A) is nearer to position NL than NC.
