Walter Breen

Obverse 3. LE. LH. LH. LH. Large date with a thick center stroke to 8, as in 1813. Date closely spaced with 1 8 apart, tops of 81 unusually close, and second 1 low. LIBER repunched: extra serifs below top of L, extra outline at right upright of I, BER first punched lower, then corrected. Top lock is lower than before with other details of the hair cruder than on earlier dies, apparently retouched by Scot. Stars 4 and 5 are more closely spaced than others. Broad coarse dentils.
Reverse C. C. SPR. PC. Pc. See Remarks. Normal NS with strong serifs. N(I) has the right foot of left upright extended to the right by a spine. D high and leans right. ATE high. Most easily distinguished from reverse D of number 4 by position of the leaf barely beyond (E)S.
Die states: I. Perfect. Reverse dentils are strong.
II. Clash marks within the wreath right of (N)E and (N)T. Dentils are weaker and some letters merge with the rim. A die line joins the bases of N(T).

III. Rust pits develop in and right of lower curls and near the ribbon. Reverse may have been reground. The spine at N(l) no longer shows, dentils are blurred, many flow lines, and tops of s OF A merge into the rim. McGirk 1B.
Equivalents: Proskey 1. Doughty 217. McGirk 1A, 1B. Clapp 1. Sheldon 288. EAC 3. Encyclopedia 1784.
