Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 2. Pointed 1 in date with its top touching the hair. Long straight die cut slants down to the right from the ribbon through the hair left of center. Die file marks from end of the drapery slant down to the rim and later fade.

Reverse B.

Die states: I. Perfect obverse.

II. At least three sets of clash marks from leaves near the hair ribbon and before the face and throat. These later gradually fade.

III, Bulge below and left of the lowest curl, later becoming larger. Rust begins on drapery.

IV. Cracked through the bases of 180, at first faint, later heavier.

V. New heavier clash marks at the ribbon, nose, and neck. Clash marks are also visible in the hair behind the forehead. The die rust and crack of states III and IV are advanced.

Equivalents: Proskey 3. Doughty 201. McGirk 3A, 3B. Clapp 3. Sheldon 269. EAC 3. Encyclopedia 1766.

Rarity 1. Seen slightly less than one-third as often as number 1.

Remarks: The letter punches are as in 1803 obverse 14; the date punches instead match those of 1805-06 half eagles, a condition pointed out by John D. Wright. "A Study on Overdated United States Large Cents, Part I"
