Reverse B. Small fraction and letters. The denominator is spaced 1 00 with a long fraction bar beginning above the 1. Unusually wide space between F and A. Point of the top right leaf is beyond the right side of (E)S with the outer point of the triple leaf below the left foot of F (normally at 0). Bases of AT are close and R is slightly high. (N)T away from leaf. Right feet of TS broken off. Top serif of D is short.
Die states: I. Obverse repolished: the traces of repunching on 5 are gone. Parts of hair are attenuated. Reverse repolished to remove clash marks.
II. New clash marks from the leaves near throat. The obverse border is weaker.
III. Bulges develop in the left and right obverse fields and at D, later extending between D s.

Rarify 3.
Remarks: Doughty called this variety scarce. Sheldon called it "R-6" and added "Decidedly rare. I have never seen more than a dozen examples of it."He was startled to learn that by December 1953 the known number had more than tripled. Most likely he had based his rarity rating only on the high-grade examples in collections known to him.
