Commemorative Coins of the United States

About The Author

Q. David Bowers began his interest in coin collecting as a teenager in 1952 and became a dealer in 1953, holding his first bourse table at an American Numismatic Association convention at the age of 16 in 1955, at which time he was not yet old enough to be an ANA member. From the very beginning he found commemoratives to be of interest, and in the years since the1950s he has bought, sold, and auctioned many important collections, hoards, and other holdings in the series. During the1980s he was the guest of Mint Director Donna Pope at several ceremonial striking events and provided several suggestions concerning design and distribution of commemorative coins.

The author of over three dozen books, Bowers has written for all major numismatic publications and is currently a columnist for Coin World and The Numismatist. His Coin World column, "Numismatic Depth Study," is the longest-running feature by an outside contributor to that publication. From 1977 to 1979 he served as president of the Professional Numismatists Guild, later receiving the Founder's Award, the PNG's highest honor. He served as a member of the ANA Board of Governors 1979-1981, as vice president 1981-1983, and as president of the ANA 1983-1985. He is a recipient of the ANA Medal of Merit and is the author of a two-volume work commissioned by the ANA, The American Numismatic Association Centennial History.
