1864 Proof Set with Gold

The basic nine-piece 1864 Proof Set contains both the copper nickel and bronze Indian cents, and introduced the Two Cent piece to help alleviate the shortage of small change brought about by hoarding during the Civil War. While the mintage of business strike silver issues was impacted by the war, the Proof coinage of 470 silver pieces was low, but not abnormally so. The mintage of 50 pieces for the gold coins was slightly above average, but after 150 years, it is the survivors that really matter, not the original mintage. On that score, it is estimated perhaps a dozen Double Eagles have survived, making it unquestionably rare. Fewer than half a dozen PCGS certified pieces have appeared at auction since 1999. The Eagle isn't much better, with only three appearances so far this century.
